Torchwood

Originally published at Bevilacqua.us.

Elizabeth and I have been enjoying the latest BBC spinoff of Doctor Who entitled Torchwood. The only thing I was able to think about in this entire series was “Why the hell can’t the SciFi channel produce SciFi this decent?”

Besides that though, Touchwood is realistic, has some great plotlines at times, decent acting, no overuse of cheesy special effects, and one hell of a comeback by Burn Gorman.

I could watch this stuff all day long.

I should also add that if you like good drama and didn’t catch the remake of Charles Dicken’s Bleak House on PBS as you should have, you can still get it on DVD. It’s THREE discs of some of the best character acting for a story of this magnitude. GET IT. Sit by the fireplace and watch it with a hearty winter ale in hand. You will not regret it!

Oh, Mike and I both thought Torchwood was just awful! We turned over after about 10 minutes.
Have you ever seen Life on Mars? If you haven't, that's something I'd recommend to you!

I definitely think I may be desensitized to awfull TV living here in the states where TV shows are a dime and dozen and rarely well conceived. That said, and more so in SciFi, there is great TV, decent TV, bareable TV and rejectable TV. I put Torchwood in the decent to bareable slot. Hope that clears up what I mean.

In no way is it (so far) great. The new Doctor Who series however, is great.

So let me thank you Brits for supplementing the State's all but near draught of decent SciFi TV.

I'll have to check out Life on Mars :)

It's really something :) Or at least I thought it was. And yes the new Doctor Who has been great so far, except the one with Peter Kay as the alien that ate people and hardly had the Doctor in it at all. Mike saw that episode before I did and described it as "45 minutes of watching a dog have a poo.". I had to agree. But hey, they can't be perfect all the time can they now?
Have you seen the entire second series yet? I was about to mention it, but if you haven't seen it then I don't want to spoil anything!

I haven't yet. It takes a little while for us to get it in the States. No spoilers please! :)

I just looked up Peter Kay on Wikipedia. The episode she's talking about was Love & Monsters - that HORRIBLE episode with the Doctor Who fan club.

Yes, it was like "45 minutes of watching a dog have a poo."

Oh now I remember that one. Why did you have to go and do that, I was content in forgetting that thing....

I miss "Farscape" that Sci-Fi used to premiere on their network/channel. That was an amazing show.
