Im in ur computer, overburdening ur CPUz

A friend of mine mentioned to me that my updated site design now causes his CPU to spike to 100% and his Firefox to slow down dramatically. Much of this is due to the use of java script for the snow effect. There are possibly more issues with the transparent text over top of a very large, static image.

My dual-core laptop hits about 80% on one CPU and 40% with the other with my site, hence, why I’m asking for facts and maybe even a few opinions. I’m most likely going to shut down the snow.

On my MacBook 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB of RAM, the Activity Monitor shows FireFox taking anywhere from 85-95% of the CPU resources when I hit your page. And the fan came on which rarely happens. Sometimes PhotoShop makes the fan come on.

eek, fan huh? I'm noticing it messing with LJ's java script comments now.

Good god. Why don't you add some blinking text while you're at it.. And maybe the hamster dance? :)

Hah!! A friend of mine suggested that I change the snow to rain or leaves or cats and dogs depending on the weather. I could easily do that with a small script. But looking at the CPU usage, heh... just killed my dreams.

Negligible impact on XP 1GB 2.8GHz Hyper-Threaded w/Firefox.

My Macbook (Core Duo 2.00ghz, 2GB RAM), latest version of Tiger 10.4.11, 2.0.0.9 Firefox:

CPU increases by 70% with Firefox on your page.

Firefox doesn't seem to like transparent overlays on any of my BSD or Linux systems. My OpenBSD workstation would probably throw a fit. I'm sure my XP machine would be fine.

Under Opera 9.22 (not latest version...) on Tiger, it uses 60% of CPU and averages 50%. When I navigate away, it drops exponentially.

Maybe it's not so much our browsers as our Windowing system.

I just added a Stop Snow java script line to the front page above the navigation. I also decreases the flakes from 60 to 30. I think that might be enough effort so I can leave it enabled.

I got the java script line from the author's home page

Yeah it's fine to me. If I can't see stuff like this on one of my dinosaur computers, I just go use a faster one.

Though now I'm sort of interested in experimenting on my boxes to try and narrow down the "problem"...

Hah... just as I thought would happen on my OpenBSD 4.2 (running generic bsd.mp kernel) box at work:

soundwave~ $ dmesg |grep cpu
cpu0 at mainbus0: apid 0 (boot processor)
cpu0: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz, 2793.39 MHz
cpu0: FPU,VME,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,PAE,MCE,CX8,APIC,SEP,MTRR,PGE,MCA,CMOV,PAT,PSE36,CFLUSH,DS,ACPI,MMX,FXSR,SSE,SSE2,SS,HTT,TM,SBF,SSE3,MWAIT,DS-CPL,CNXT-ID,CX16,xTPR,NXE,LONG

When I have a tab with your site loaded, but it's in the background:

CPU1 states: 10.3% user, 0.0% nice, 0.4% system, 0.0% interrupt, 89.2% idle
Memory: Real: 261M/404M act/tot Free: 582M Swap: 0K/2055M used/tot

PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE WAIT TIME CPU COMMAND
16776 kferguso 54 0 128M 157M run/0 - 37:24 64.45% firefox-bin
3060 kferguso 2 0 33M 137M sleep/0 select 101:56 3.66% Xorg

When I have a tab open and your site is displayed:

load averages: 1.11, 0.97, 0.64 11:13:53
53 processes: 2 running, 49 idle, 2 on processor
CPU0 states: 46.3% user, 0.0% nice, 0.0% system, 0.0% interrupt, 53.7% idle
CPU1 states: 56.9% user, 0.0% nice, 0.0% system, 0.0% interrupt, 43.1% idle
Memory: Real: 264M/408M act/tot Free: 578M Swap: 0K/2055M used/tot

PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE WAIT TIME CPU COMMAND
3060 kferguso 64 0 33M 137M run/1 - 102:50 86.23% Xorg
16776 kferguso 32 0 129M 158M onproc/0 - 39:27 12.94% firefox-bin

So it's naughty Xorg. Firefox basically grinds to a near-halt and performance gets all choppy. Oh well, no can have pretteh.

Glad to hear your recovery is going well. I updated wordpress on my server just in time for the release of 2.3.2 (i updated from 2.3.0) using the subconversion method. I was able to keep the livepress+ plugin as well.

My cpu goes to about 70% at times when viewing your page. hopefully I will get around to changing the theme. take care.

Thank you for giving me your blog's URL. I just read through it and noticed you had written much about me. Thank you, Friend:) Very kind of you to keep me in your thoughts throughout this time. And my condolences for your Benny. Loosing a friend is difficult. I know. I can't bare the thought.

Thanks for your kind words. My wife and I are getting better with the situation, at first it was hard to be in the house but my wife and I decided to start the year on a positive note, hoping this new year will bring better things. I hope your new year starts off well too.

Thanks for the note on the Subconversion method for Wordpress. It made the upgrade process easier. Now I just need to find a decent theme.

I found that 365beers community on your friends list really interesting. I guess you and Lyz still partake in the occasional ale?

Have a good day.

It's complicated at this stage. I've given up drinking completely. Elizabeth wants to continue drinking. I think she needs to do what she wants just as I need to do this for my health, sanity, or lack of sanity ;-p
