Sinead O’Connor Live at the Keswick Theater

Originally published at Bevilacqua.us.

Alright, I promise this is the final months-old post. I’m sure you can tell with the amount of posts I’ve had in the past week that I have nothing better to do while sitting here in my chair, healing, in between physical therapy :)

Back in the summer of 2007 we stumbled across an ad for Sinead O’Connor to perform live at the Keswick Theater on mischief night, October 30th 2007. When I mentioned this to Elizabeth she agreed with me that we should probably see her perform while her vocal chords are still only just past their prime. We mentioned this to our friends David and Kathy and they purchased seats for the performance as well.

We stopped at David and Kathy’s house first to admire Kathy’s impressive massive collection of Patrick Stewart memorabilia. Kathy runs a local fan club. I suppose I should have taken a photo of her den. Her walls and, well, just about every available space, was covered with some type of Patrick Stewart poster, action figure, and entertainment media.

We had also arranged in this time to pick up a reclined exercise bike they had in their possession that they never use and thought would help me in my recovery. A very generous gift, one that I am currently using every day to help prepare me for outpatient treatment following last week’s hip surgery.

After loading the bike into the Rav, we jumped into Kathy’s Jeep and headed over to G & G’s microbrewery just across from the Keswick for a quick bite and a beer before the show. Elizabeth and I had the Hop Attack, an very home brew tasting IPA. Nice body with an extra kick of fresh hops at the end and a decent amount of strength. A great home brew paired nicely with our pub sandwiches.

David at G & G's

G & G’s is surprisingly tiny for a pub so close to a major theater. The place filled to capacity quickly before the show. We were fortunate in David and Kathy knowing at what time was best to arrive so that we could get a table.

Then it was off to the concert. Damien Dempsey, the opening act, blew us away. It’s the rare occurrence where an opening act is as talented, articulate, composed, humorous, and fully entertaining as Mr. Dempsey was. All of his chosen songs struck home. I could understand each word he sung. His voice was superb, ranging up there with some of my favorite male vocal artists. His performance was like having dessert before dinner.

And then with little delay Sinead and her group came onto the stage. Sinead, dressed professionally, began her night of knock-out vocals pushing her voice to the limits, filling the Keswick with crystal clear tone as far back as the lobby, and giving the crowd exactly what they wanted. A wonderful concert.
