Ultraworld.
When I was growing up these parties were really something else. They exposed me to some of the most exciting electronic music I have ever heard and some of the best DJs, Producers and Talents on the planet. Not to mention the venues they chose. For example, the state park they aquired for Emerald Forest featuring headliners Deee-Lite. That was quite a night to say the least.
A lot happened in between then and now. Police actions, anti-rave task forces… etc. I can speculate all day on how this effected Ultraworld’s intentions of delivering quality electronic music concerts. What I saw on Saturday evening really did shock me though. Beer being sold at the party? Lots of it, lots of rock/funk/hipster integration on the main arena stage where, personally, I thought the main DJs should be, right? And where the Buzz Tent was setup, a misplaced, under-amplified sound system in a cramped area.

And in a smaller area, the Drum and Bass tent? I’m not a fan of Drum and Bass or MCs, mind you, but, I’m pretty sure they need as much room as the Buzz Tent as the music is a little more demanding to dance too, right?
I miss the old Ultraworld parties. I mentioned this to some of the people I met and talked to. I felt sort of old saying it :-)
Fortunately, this didn’t stop the DJs from destroying the floors. Christopher Lawrence made the 2.5 hour drive down, 15 minute walk from my car and 20 minute wait in line worth it ALL. And if I ever get the chance to see him in an arena you bet you’ll see me there, up front next to the speaker. He spun one great set. Frankie Bones great. He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite DJs.

Simply Jeff was great as always. Funky, fun, kept the floor moving. Love his stuff. Richard Vission was fun too, although I can’t stand it when DJs mix in Top40 Pop stuff to techno/electronic. He’s great at mixing, I’ll give him that, but, you know. Just not my style.
